august 2020 survey results

Between August 17 and 19, and between August 27 and 30, PVNU asked PV Forum subscribers to assign a priority ranking to each of six different Portola Valley issues:

  • affordable housing

  • open space and wildlife preservation

  • quality schools

  • racial opportunity and justice

  • policing and public safety, and

  • fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Individual respondents could assign the same priority ranking to any issue, resulting in some respondents assigning the same priority (e.g., 1st Priority) ranking to two or more issues. A total of 68 distinct respondents replied, with

  • 42 respondents (62%) ranking fire safety as a first priority;

  • 37 respondents (54%) ranking open space as a first priority;

  • 30 respondents (44%) ranking policing and public safety as a first priority;

  • 23 respondents (34%) ranking quality schools as a first priority;

  • 18 respondents (26%) ranking racial opportunity and justice as a first priority; and

  • 10 respondents (15%) ranking affordable housing as a first priority.

A graphical depiction of the issues ranked with the highest (first) priority is shown below. Because each respondent could assign the a “first priority” to more than one issue, the total number of “first priority” rankings assigned to each issue exceeds the sample size (68). This was revised in the September survey to require each respondent to assign a different priority ranking to each different issue.
